The 925 stamp on silver jewellery indicates that the piece contains 92.5% Silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). This 925 stamp, denotes its purity and authenticity of being sterling silver
Here are some other ways to identify real sterling silver jewellery
1. Magnetic test - Magnets have no effect on silver. If you find the jewellery is attracted to the magnet, you know that it is not sterling silver.
2. Smell the Jewellery - Silver does not produce a smell. If it has strong smell the jewellery could contain to much copper to be sterling silver
3. Listen for bell-like ring - When sterling silver is tapped it produces a bell - like sound for 1-2 seconds. If you don't hear a ring, the jewellery is not sterling silver.
You can carefully tap the jewellery with your finger or a metal coin, use extreme caution so you do not ding it or dent it.
